Earth Tone Flutes are made in a wide spectrum of keys and woods,
The flute woods shown are (from left to right): Curly Redwood, Spalted Maple, Poplar, Figured (Tiger) Maple, Redwood, African Mahogany and Purple Heart wood.
These are the typical style of NAF based upon the "block" flute designs of the Plains Indians. They are tuned to the minor, pentatonic scale and have a nearly complete chromatic range (about 14 notes).
Within the world of the contemporary Native American Style flute there have come to exist two "categories" of NAF: The Plains Style flute and The Woodlands Style flute. The terms "plains" and "woodlands" are monikers that are used to differentiate the voicings of these flutes. "Woodlands" is a modern, made-up description. They are general terms with a degree of flexibility within them. Broadly speaking, the Woodlands sound has been described as full, round, sweet, and warm, while the Plains sound is more focused, penetrating, and clear. Like anything subjective, these descriptions are very movable and open to interpretation.
Earth Tone Flutes are designed to embody the Woodlands Sound.
